Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ou ELP) foi uma banda de rock progressivo britânica formada nos anos 70 por Keith Emerson (teclado), Greg Lake (guitarra, baixo e vocais) e Carl Palmer (bateria). Entrou para história da música por ser a primeira banda de rock a levar um sintetizador, na época uma aparelho gigantesco, monofônico e analógico, para um show, em fins da década de 60. Entre os seus sucessos, destaca-se Lucky Man.

A banda foi formada em 1970. Seu nome quase foi Hendrix, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (ou HELP). Em 1969, Keith Emerson estava tocando com os The Nice, e Greg Lake estava tocando com o King Crimson. Após tocarem nos mesmos concertos algumas vezes, os dois tentaram trabalhar em conjunto, mas perceberam que seus estilos não eram compatíveis, mas sim complementares. Eles desejavam se tornar uma banda composta por teclado, baixo e bateria, algo que nunca havia sido feito ateriormente, mas sentiram que era algo utópico, e então saíram a procura de um baterista. Antes de confirmar Carl Palmer na banda, Mitch Mitchell (do Jimi Hendrix Experience) foi contactado. Ele não se interessou mas passou a idéia para Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, cansado de sua banda e querendo experimentar idéias diferentes, expressou interesse em tocar com o grupo. Por conflitos nas agendas dos músicos isso não foi possível inicialmente, mas o plano era unir Hendrix no Isle of Wight Festival (em 1970). Infelizmente Hendrix faleceu, reduzindo a banda à Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Os primeiros quatro anos foram muito férteis em criatividade. Lake produziu os primeiros seis álbuns da banda, começando por Emerson, Lake and Palmer em 1970, que continha o hit Lucky Man. Tarkus (de 1971), foi o primeiro álbum conceitual de sucesso da banda, descrito como uma estória de evolução reversa. A gravação ao vivo de 1971 da interpretação da obra de Modest Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition foi um sucesso, o que contribuiu para a popularidade da banda. O álbum de 1972 Trilogy continha o single mais vendido da banda, From the Beginning.

No final de 1973, o álbum Brain Salad Surgery foi lançado, se tornando o álbum de estúdio mais famoso da banda. As letras foram parcialmente escritas por Peter Sinfield, que foi o criador do conceito King Crimson e único letrista em seus primeiros quatro álbuns. As subsequentes turnês mundiais foram documentadas em uma gravação ao vivo tripla, entitulada Welcome Back my Friends to the Show that Never Ends.

O som do ELP era dominado pelo órgão Hammond e pelo sintetizador Moog de Emerson. As composições da banda eram muito influenciadas pela música erudita do período clássico, com adições de jazz e hard rock. Pode-se dizer que, pelas citações clássicas, a banda se encaixa também no sub-gênero do rock sinfônico.

ELO - Electric Light Orchestra

O Electric Light Orchestra, ou apenas ELO, foi formado em 1970, em Birmingham, na Inglaterra. Liderado pelo vocalista Roy Wood, o grupo ainda tinha Jeff Lynne (guitarra), Rick Price (baixo) e Bev Bevan (bateria). Eles se conheceram na banda The Move, que estava ativa desde 1966 e a intenção era continuar no estilo rock melódico com influências clássicas.

Morando em Londres, o grupo chamou o instrumentista de sopro Bill Hunt e o violonista Steve Woolam para gravar o álbum de estréia, “No Answer”. Durante os shows de divulgação, ocorreram mudanças na formação do grupo com a entrada de Wilf Gibson (violino), Richard Tandy (baixo), Andy Craig e Hugh Mac Dowell (ambos no cello), com isso, o disco emplacou a música “10538” no Top 10 britânico.

Algumas semanas depois, Wood resolveu deixar o grupo para criar o Wizzard e mais quatro integrantes deixaram o ELO em seguida - Jeff Lynne assumiu a liderança, os vocais e a guitarra para dar continuidade ao trabalho com a nova formação: Michael D’Albuquerque (baixo), Richard Tandy (teclado) Mike Edwards e Colin Walker (cellos).

Em 1973, o disco “ELO II” fez a volta do grupo às paradas musicais com um cover de Chuck Berry, “Roll Over Beethoven”. A canção se tornou também o primeiro ‘hit’ nos Estados Unidos, mas foi com “Cant’t Get It Out of My Head” do disco “Eldorado”, lançado em 1974, que o grupo chegou ao Top 10 norte-americano.

O sucesso do ELO cresceu a cada ano, mas as mudanças de formação se tornaram constantes. 5 milhões de cópias do disco “A New World Record” foram vendidas em 1976. Com bons lançamentos, entre eles “Discovery” (1979), responsável por duas canções no Top 10, garantiram a boa venda de “Greatest Hits”, com os maiores sucessos da carreira do grupo. Na mesma época, Jeff Lynne compôs algumas músicas para a trilha sonora de “Xanadu” com Olívia Newton-John, elas foram gravadas pelo ELO e pela atriz e cantora.

Na década de 80, o entra e sai não foi diferente. Após o lançamento de “Secret Messages” em 1983, Bevan saiu para tocar no Black Sabbath. Mas, três anos depois ele voltou a tempo de gravar “Balance of Power” com o hit “Calling América”, que não repetiu o sucesso dos anteriores. Com Jeff Lynne trabalhando também como produtor de outros músicos, o ELO perdeu a popularidade com o tempo, logo, Jeff se lançou em carreira solo e o grupo se desfez.

Biografia:

Depois de se mostrar uma promessa desde cedo, como um músico, aprendendo piano, violão e tocando flauta desde criança, Alan começou a assumir o papel de ouvinte no lugar de cantor. Embora ainda trabalhando como um músico, nos anos sessenta, ele almejou uma carreira nos estúdios "Abbey Road" em Londres, onde, mais tarde teve a sorte de ter participado no último trabalho dos "Beatles" (ele foi o engenheiro de som assistente em "Let It Be" e no álbum "Abbey Road").

Uma associação longa se seguiu, ambos com o estúdio e Paul McCartney. Quando o Beatles se dividiram, Alan foi o engenheiro de som responsável em clássicos como: "Red Rose Speedway" , " Hi Hi Hi " e "C Moon". Ele teve uma atuação semelhante com "The Hollies" e em muitos hits, incluindo "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother", e "The Air That I Breathe".Isto, porém, era só começo, ele foi a inteligência por trás da engenharia do album "Dark Side of the Moon" do Pink Floyd.
